By Kristy Alpert 12.21.15

Whether it’s homemade or poured from a packet, there’s nothing like cuddling up with a steaming cup of hot cocoa to warm the body and melt away those cold weather blues. Hot chocolate is the perfect pairing for any winter activity, but there are so many more ways to liven up the blend than simply tossing in a few micro marshmallows.

For an untraditional take on a classic holiday drink, we’ve rounded up some of the most unique ways to spruce up your hot cocoa. From spicy peppers to savory bacon, check out these unique ways to enhance your HoCho.

Chocolate Banana Cocoa

Make two cups of plain hot chocolate using your favorite mix or recipe, and then pour the liquid into a blender with one very ripe banana. Blend until smooth and either reheat over a stovetop or nuke it in two microwave-safe mugs. Garnish with a dollop of whipped cream, a few dried banana chips, and a drizzle of chocolate syrup.

Mexican Hot Chocolate

This version gets a spicy and tasty kick by simply adding in a pinch of cinnamon and a dash of cayenne pepper. Top with cinnamon whipped cream and garnish with two slices of a fresh Habanero pepper.

Maple Bacon Hot Chocolate

For this sweet and savory blend, simply squirt Kelly’s Delight Maple Bacon Cane Syrup into a mug of pre-made hot cocoa. You can also make your own syrup by frying a few strips of chopped bacon in maple syrup and vanilla extract, and then straining the liquid from the pan into a cup of hot cocoa. Top with whipped cream and remaining candied bacon bits.

Peanut Butter and Fluff

Simply stir in a spoonful of creamy peanut butter and a spoonful of marshmallow fluff for a decadent and creamy fluffernutter-esque treat. Top with whipped cream and crushed peanuts or two jumbo marshmallows.
