The Coziest Backyard Glamping Guide

By Jill Kring 3.2.21

Does your family need a break from being in the house all winter? Consider a getaway in the safety and convenience of your own backyard.

If you haven’t heard of glamping, it’s a cross between the words “glamorous” and “camping” — and that’s exactly what it is! Glamping is a style of camping that’s a little less rugged and a little more comfortable. It might sound fancy, but the truth is, you don’t need to go anywhere or buy anything to make your own little glamping paradise.

Here are some fun ways you can create a magical backyard glamping experience.

The Perfect Backyard Glamping Getup

The most essential element is a large, comfortable, and well-decorated tent or yurt. Next, you’ll need a comfy sleeping arrangement — preferably an air mattress, which you can dress up with a selection of blankets and throw pillows.

To add to your luxurious outdoor lifestyle, consider moving comfortable outdoor furniture down from your patio to your tent. You can also set up an outdoor rug to keep your feet clean. (Be careful to avoid areas of your lawn where you might accidentally kill the grass.)

Light Up Your Glampsite

Once it gets dark, you’ll want to make sure you still have access to a light source. Keep solar lanterns on hand for the long, dark night. If you want to really get in the camping spirit, build a fire pit so you can gather round it and roast marshmallows.

Glamping Gastronomy

Kids always love making food over a campfire. This outdoor cast-iron grill, or any camping gear you have, will serve you well. Get inventive and try to avoid heading back into the house for supplies — it’s more fun if you pretend you’re in the middle of nowhere.

Grill up hot dogs and burgers, bring out a cooler of sodas or fun sparkling waters, and — of course — have s’mores supplies on hand. It’ll be a party in no time.

Games for Glampers

Hopefully, this backyard glamping experience is an opportunity to disconnect from screens and enjoy a bit of the outdoors. Here are a few fun ways to while away the hours:

  • Set up a nature-centered scavenger hunt. The kids will love exploring their own backyards and learning something about the natural world around their homes.
  • Make some DIY outdoor games the family will love, like cornhole, giant Jenga, or capture the flag.
  • Cozy up in your tent with some board games for a Wild West game night.
