Heat Wave Hacks

By Callie Leahy 6.3.15

Texas is known for being a beautiful state, full of bluebonnets and livestock, where everything is bigger than the other 49 states.  But Texas is also known for being as hot and dry as the Sahara and as humid as a swamp, sometimes even both in the same day.

Beat the heat this summer with these six easy heat wave hacks —

  • Cool window treatments — Hang a wet sheet in front of an open window to help create a cooling effect when the wind blows.
  • Make sure your fan is turning the right direction — Most ceiling fans have two seasonal settings, and if your fan is still in “winter mode” you might be pulling hot air down to warm the room. Be sure to switch your fan to the summer setting with counterclockwise-turning blades.
  • Make a cold compress —Add rice to a cotton sock and tie off the end with a rubber band or string and stick it in the freezer. The rice will hold the chill for a substantial amount of time to help you cool down in a flash, or even keep you cool while you sleep.
  • Ice hacks —
    • Giant ice cubes — For a simple heat wave hack, make giant ice cubes for your drinks, cooler, or compress by freezing water in a muffin tin.
    • Frozen water bottle — Can’t fit ice cubes into the neck of your water bottle? No problem! Put just enough water in a water bottle so that it can be left on its side without a lid and put it in the freezer. Once frozen, the water bottle will have a built-in, slow-melting ice block.
    • DIY air conditioner — Create a throwback to original air-conditioning units by placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan to create a quick and easy A/C.
