Hidden-Gem Lakes in Texas

By Brian Kendall 4.5.17

Geronimo! Is there anything better than splishing and splashing the day away at a lake in the Lone Star State? Celebrate the warm weather and blue skies with our roundup of the top six hidden-gem lakes across Texas.

Possum Kingdom Lake

Possum Kingdom might own the title of best name for a body of water, in not just the state of Texas but in the entire U.S. But it’s not just the name that makes this lake unique. The reservoir, constructed in the Brazos River basin, is home to the famous Hell’s Gate, defined by two huge cliffs that stand as gates to the entry to a cove on the south end of the lake and create a picturesque scene with Texas’ rolling hills in the background. And there’s no shortage of things to do, either. Located just two hours west of Fort Worth, the beautiful lake is ideal for boating, fishing, hiking, and gorgeous sunsets.

Richland Chambers Reservoir

A mere hour south of the hustle and bustle of Dallas/Fort Worth lies this pristine water reservoir home to a litany of activities perfect for a weekend getaway. But if there’s one thing you must do if you happen to visit this lake — you’ve got to cast a line. Here you’ll experience championship fishing with a crop of nearly every species of game fish that resides in Texas, which includes white and hybrid striped bass, blue and channel catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, and more.

Lake Texoma

On the border between Oklahoma and Texas, this lake barely squeezes into the Lone Star State. And boy, are we glad we can stake claim to this beauty. This massive body of water is one of the largest reservoirs in the U.S. and attracts over 6 million visitors a year. And it’s easy to see why. The lake is home to wildlife refuges, two state parks, and plenty of fishing opportunities.

Quarry Lake

While surrounded by apartment buildings and owned by a gym, this lake remains one of the Austin area’s best kept secrets. The Edwards Aquifer-fed water is pristine, the fish are biting, and the scenery is breathtaking. Though the lake is no longer public and requires a gym membership for you to enjoy it, you’ll also get to take advantage of the lake’s trail, stand-up paddleboarding, dockside yoga, kayaking, and swimming.

Lake Raven

Located among the tall pines of Huntsville State Park sits this beautiful, 200-acre lake. While the lake is certainly hushed and serene, it lies just an hour north of Houston’s busy streets, making this a perfect getaway for the city-dwelling family. While enjoying the water, you can swim, boat, camp, and fish for some largemouth bass that weigh in excess of 10 pounds!

Inks Lake

The true definition of a hidden gem, this modestly sized waterhole in the heart of the Texas Hill Country sits in the shade of the beautiful live oaks and pecan trees that make this part of Texas so unique. Inks Lake is perfect for the curious explorer or those who want to do some paddling in a canoe or kayak. The state park also boasts nearly 200 campsites, and while there, don’t forget to take a dip in the warm waters of the aptly named Devil’s Waterhole.

Don’t miss your chance to take advantage of these beautiful lakes as the weather remains perfect for taking a dip or catching some rays. And, of course, if you do plan a trip to one of these hidden gems, be sure you know how to play safe on the lake.
