Creating a Homemade Snow Day in Texas

By Sarah Rosen 1.1.21

Texans don’t often get the chance to enjoy a snow day — days with fond memories of precious days off from school thanks to snow, filled with sledding, snowball fights, and making snow angels and snowmen.

But just because some parts of Texas don’t get snow doesn’t mean we can’t create our own snow days. Here are a few ways to make homemade snow and some activities for snow days spent at home.

3 Ways to Make Homemade Snow

Mix up your own snow with one of these three recipes:

Baking soda and water: This is the simplest way to make homemade snow. In a bowl, combine 1 cup of baking soda with water, mixing in 1 tablespoon at a time. Stir with a fork or a whisk until the consistency is powdery and sticks together.

Baking soda and shaving cream: Instead of using water in the above recipe, substitute shaving cream for stickier snow. Mix in a little shaving cream at a time with your desired amount of baking soda until it’s fluffy and ready for molding into snowballs!

Cornstarch and lotion: For this recipe, use equal parts cornstarch and lotion. If the snow isn’t powdery enough, add more cornstarch until you’ve reached your desired consistency.

DIY Snow Day Activities

Get into the true snow-day spirit with some snowy activities.

Play in the Snow
Though homemade snow might not be up to par for skiing or sledding, there are still plenty of fun ways to play with it. Make mini snowmen or a winter wonderland scene. You can even take the kids outside and have a snowball fight! (Or have it inside — it’s your snow day, so you make the rules.)

Cozying Up After a “Cold” Winter Day
One of the best parts of snow days is coming inside to be greeted by a warm blanket and a cup of hot cocoa. To escape into a world of wintry fantasy, finish off your snow day “at the movies” by throwing on a classic snowy feature like “Ice Age,” “Frozen,” or “The Polar Express.”

Of course, even in Texas, you may be lucky enough to get a real snow day. Find out your chance of snow at our weather center.
