7 Lawn Equipment Maintenance Steps

By James Mayfield 3.7.14

As plants begin to bloom, yard work begins to call. If it’s been awhile since you’ve dusted off your lawn equipment, make sure it’s still up to snuff with these seven steps to ensure safe, efficient, and beautiful landscaping.

  • Give your machines a thorough cleaning. Chances are some cobwebs and caked-on grass (especially under the mower) have accumulated.
  • You should sharpen mower blades at least twice each season. If they’re dull, consider using a hand file or take them to a professional to improve the edge.
  • Change the oil filter and drain any oil left from last season, then refill the engine’s oil.
  • Check screws, nuts, and bolts for tightness. Mowers can vibrate and rattle like crazy, loosening the parts that keep the machine together.
Check the wheels to make sure they are securely fastened.
  • Change out spark plugs.
  • For electric-powered equipment, make sure cords are in good shape, not twisted or frayed.
