October Monthly Checklist

By Kristy Alpert 10.1.15

Each month, Texas Farm Bureau Insurance brings you a monthly checklist to help keep your family, household, and insurance needs in order and top of mind, including everything from cleaning and organizing to “don’t forgets” and holiday info.

1. In honor of National Fire Prevention Month, work with your family to create an escape route for each room in your home, and then hold surprise fire drills to practice staying low and checking for hot doors safely.

2. Before the weather cools down and your home’s heating devices switch into gear, clean your fireplace, inspect the flue, and test/replace all the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.

3. Prep for trick-or-treaters by cleaning up any loose yard debris, trimming low-hanging limbs, and removing any potential tripping or fire hazards before costumed kids swarm your stoop.

4. Don’t let October tricks dampen your holiday; join the Property Protection Program by picking up a sign from your local Texas Farm Bureau office. The program gives a $1,000 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction for trespass, theft, or mischief on property displaying the sign. 5. October is a great time for planting wildflower seeds. Sprinkle bluebonnet, poppy, Indian paintbrush, and coreopsis seeds around your yard for a natural and colorful blanket.

6. Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month by shopping with businesses that have partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to donate a portion of their October sales to the cause. Keep an eye out for that iconic pink ribbon before you make a purchase.

7. Eat a corn dog at the State Fair of Texas (Sept. 25–Oct. 18).

8. As the colors of the leaves begin to change this month, take note of the recent changes in your own life and consider scheduling a 360 Review® with your Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Agent to make sure your policy is up to date.

9. Oct. 12 is Columbus Day. In honor of our favorite explorer, be an explorer in your hometown by trying a new restaurant or walking the streets of a neighborhood you’ve yet to discover.

10. Winter is coming; use the last few warm days of the year to winterize your external plumbing systems before the risk of freezing temperatures sets in.
