Top Hacks for a Great Time at the State Fair of Texas

Big Tex is well rested, and he’s ready to party.

For three weeks beginning Sept. 25, the State Fair of Texas will open its doors to thousands of eager attendees ready to partake in the mega amounts of fun the fair serves up each year.

Here are some main attractions to look out for during this year’s Texas State Fair.

Food
The State Fair of Texas offers the usual fair food, such as nachos, corn dogs, and funnel cakes, but what makes our state’s fair unique is its over-the-top assortment of fried foods. In past years, there have been fried Oreos, deep-fried breakfast, chicken-fried loaded baked potatoes, and fried sriracha balls, just to name a few. Each year, the fair adds more new items to its menu.

New to the fair this year is Thrifty Thursdays, when participating food vendors offer one of their signature menu items at a reduced price.

Entertainment
Live music acts from all over the world is another reason people flock to the fair grounds. If music isn’t your thing, though, the fair offers pig races, exotic birds, a petting zoo, rides, and a parade once the sun goes down. And be sure to snap a selfie with the king himself, Big Tex.

Kids
The fair is a place for everyone, but kids especially have a blast. Some things to keep in mind: Admission for children younger than age 3 is free, and admission for children shorter than 48” is $14. Strollers can be rented for tiny tots, and there is a Safe Kids Program just in case anyone gets lost.

Fair Hack
To save cash, visitors may bring their own food and drink to the fair. Just remember no glass containers, alcohol, or metal knives and forks are allowed. Coolers will be searched at the entrance.
