August Events: Splashing Around
Slather on the sunscreen and hit the road. At these events, you can float along the state’s laziest rivers, slide down the wildest water park rides, and enjoy aquatic entertainment of all types, from sand castle-building tournaments to puppy swimsuit competitions.
North Texas
Flick and Float, Aug. 4, Rowlett
Few things say “summer” better than watching a movie from a floating inner tube. Wet Zone allows you to do just that. Bring the whole family for an after-hours screening of The Lego Batman Movie under the stars. If you prefer stationary seating, you are welcome to bring a lawn chair. The gates open at 8 p.m. Refreshments from Chick-fil-A will be available for purchase.
Admission is $6 or free for season-pass holders.
Doggie Splash Day, Aug. 11, Mesquite
Attention dog paddlers, both human and canine: Come to the 14th annual Doggie Splash Day from 9 a.m. to noon to cool off at Vanston Pool. Bring your pup to play in the wading pool or lap pool, or to venture off the 1 meter diving board, if they dare. If you’ve got a competitive pet, you can enter them in the dog paddle race, diving contest, or creative swimsuit competition.
Admission: $5 for one person with a pet. $2 for each additional pet. $1 for spectators.
Central Texas
Free Swim & The Little Mermaid, Aug. 17, Boerne
Join the Boerne Parks & Recreation department for a free swim at the City Lake Park pool, followed by a screening of a true aquatic classic, Disney’s The Little Mermaid. The movie will begin at sunset, but bring your folding chairs, coolers, and flip-flops early to stake out a good spot.
Wet N’ Wag, Aug. 18, Kerrville
Kerrville’s Parks and Recreation department is giving your pup aquatic license to explore and play in the ginormous Olympic Pool from 5 to 7 p.m. Bring a four-legged friend or two — there’s room for everybody in the 50-meter, six-lane pool, including a 1-meter low dive and 3-meter high dive. Proof of vaccination required upon registration.
East Texas
Back to School Splash Bash, Aug. 4, Sugar Land
Before long, school will be back in session. Send off the summer with a splash at Sugar Land Town Square’s back-to-school party. Beat the heat with free water slides or give the Hula-Hoop contest a whirl. With a live DJ all day, the party won’t stop. And it’s all for a good cause — any school supplies you bring will be donated to the Fort Bend Rainbow Room.
AIA Sandcastle Competition, Aug. 25, Galveston
More than 60 serious sand artists are set to compete this year for the prestigious Golden Bucket Award. Bring a picnic to observe these teams dig and sculpt their sand creations nonstop for more than five hours by the shore. Judges will select winners from diverse categories — from Pop Culture to Greatest Feat of Structural Integrity.
South Texas
Schlitterbahn South Padre Island, August, South Padre Island
You don’t need much of an excuse to visit scenic South Padre Island, but did you know Texas Farm Bureau members get discounts on admission to Schlitterbahn water parks? West Texas
Wet ’N’ Wild Waterworld, August, Anthony
Head out west to Wet ’N’ Wild Waterworld for a day trip or weekend with the kiddos. There, you can net some fun at the volleyball courts, test your balance on the slippery rock challenge, twist and turn down water slides, or find your chill in the chill pools.
Happy Hollow on the Frio, August, Concan
Discover your inner inner tuber with a little help from the Happy Hollow tube and kayak rental company along the banks of the Frio River. You can rent inner tubes, kayaks, inflatable kayaks, and even an inner tube for your cooler and waterproof speaker. Float on down the Frio at the river’s natural pace and then take a shuttle back to your car, easy peasy.
Prices start at $10 a day per tube rental.
