Vinegar: More Than Just Dressing

By Kristy Alpert 9.8.15

Your grandma had a bottle sitting right next to her Farmers’ Almanac. Your mother had a bottle stashed in the bathroom. So why is it that many modern-day homeowners only stock their kitchen cabinets with petite bottles of vinegar that gather dust on the shelves while waiting to make their dressing debut?

Vinegar is an amazingly versatile household tool, and, although it does dress up a salad quite nicely, this acidic element can also save the day in almost any room of the house. Vinegar can be a homeowner’s secret weapon, and it makes for a great all-purpose cleaner, brightener, herbicide, stain remover, and more. Here are a few ways this inexpensive household product can save the day.

  1. Brew a cleaner cup. Whether you’re using a Keurig or a Chemex, coffee residue can build up over time resulting in a slower drip process and mucky machines. For a cleaner cup of coffee, brew a full pot with equal parts vinegar and water (#nofilter), and then brew another pot with clean water to rinse out residual vinegar.
  2. Remove carpet stains. Mix 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with ¼ cup salt or baking soda. Rub the paste into the stain and let dry overnight. Vacuum away the dried residue the next day to reveal a spotless carpet.
  3. Freshen up your laundry. Add anywhere from a capful to a ½ cup of white vinegar to a wash cycle to reveal bolder colors and brighter whites. The acid does double duty by reducing static and protecting clothes from clingy dryer lint.
  4. Clean windows. Fill a bucket with two tablespoons white vinegar and a gallon of water, and then pour the mixture into a spray bottle for streak free window washing.
  5. Get rid of gnats. Fill a mason jar halfway with apple cider vinegar and a ½ teaspoon of sugar. Top the jars with cling wrap and poke a few small holes in the plastic so the bugs can enter to create an all-natural gnat trap.
