By James Mayfield 9.22.14

The 24-day extravaganza of entertainment, exhibits, and competition known as the State Fair of Texas opens its doors September 26 with a Deep in the Heart of Texans theme. So, what’s new for 2014?

Texas Sports Hall of Fame exhibition in the Hall of State: This exhibit shows off prized memorabilia from your favorite Texas sports heroes — everyone from Tom Landry to Mia Hamm, plus displays for five yet-to-be-revealed future contenders.

Canstruction Dallas: You’ll see how BIG of a commitment the State Fair makes to the community after just one look at these giant arrangements built with cans of food — all of which will be donated to hunger relief efforts.

AT&T Red River Showdown: The name isn’t all that’s new for the 109th gridiron grudge match. Watch live as new Texas Longhorns coach Charlie Strong faces off against legendary Oklahoma Sooners coach Bob Stoops on October 11.

Chevy Main Stage Headliners: This year’s live entertainment — 85 performances — includes a concert series free with admission. Headliners include: Collective Soul, The Swon Brothers from NBC’s The Voice, plus American Idol winner Fantasia and Kool & the Gang. The inaugural Red River MusicFest takes place on October 11.

Wild West Pet Palooza: While details are still under wraps, this all-new, action-packed animal show promises family fun with our furry and feathered friends.

All-New Home Depot Creative Arts Competition Kitchen: Fairgoers of all ages can head to the Creative Arts Building to compete dish-to-dish in culinary competitions. See who takes home the blue ribbon here — contest judging will begin at 10:30 a.m. daily.
