By Abi Grise 12.30.19

Texas is a great place to be if you’ve resolved to be healthy inside and out for 2020. Why not make the first step on your journey a mindful hike through Palo Duro Canyon? Or learning a Bollywood dance routine in Austin? These community and fitness-studio events will help you take inventory of your health, pick up new skills, and get your blood pumping.

Central Texas

Free KJA Aikido Class, Jan. 11, New Braunfels
If you like the sound of achieving inner peace through one-to-one combat, you’ll get a kick out of the free introductory classes at Kurita Juku Aiki New Braunfels. This martial art hails from Japan and emphasizes self-defense that actually protects both participants. Learn the basic techniques and philosophy for yourself from master instructors. All ages welcome.

Ballet Austin’s Get Fit 2020, Jan. 12, Austin
Discover many ways to meet your fitness goals with a full day of free classes at Ballet Austin. Fire up your muscles with beginner Pilates, then learn how to foam roll for recovery. Or find your groove in Bollywood and hip-hop dance classes and then cool down watching fitness presentations and sampling healthy foods. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

North Texas

Splash, Spin and Sprint, Jan. 12, Dallas
You never know until you tri. Athletes, fitness buffs, and curious gymgoers will enjoy this mini triathlon workout session hosted by Tri-Now Endurance. Improve your swimming skills with a technique review from seasoned experts. Burn calories without burning rubber on an indoor bike. Then, pick your poison: indoor or outdoor run. Sign up now, because space is limited to 50 participants.

Mom and Baby Fitness Class, Jan. 16, Benbrook
Calling new mamas! Mother’s Milk Bank of North Texas is hosting a baby-bonding fitness class focused on recovery, strength, and balance for new moms in their fourth trimester (that’s the postpartum recovery period). Spots are first come, first served and allow for modifications to keep you and your baby safe while working up a sweat.

South Texas

Mission Community Health & Wellness Fair, Jan. 4, Mission
Start your year with a clean bill of health. Come to the Mission Event Center for a complete checkup, including tests for your cholesterol levels, pulmonary function, and bone density, as well as free blood tests for the first 500 people (12-hour fast required). Get a flu shot to ward off winter bugs and learn about resources in the community that can help you stay healthy all year long.

Fifth WARD GO Neighborhood Health & Wellness Fair, Jan. 25, Houston
Bring the whole family (and a tote bag) to collect free fresh produce and watch cooking demonstrations put on by Houston’s community resource centers at The DeLuxe Theater. There will be free health screenings on site and plenty of fun activities for children.

East Texas

Hiking Through the Pines, Jan. 1, Tyler
Uncover the healing powers of nature. Set off on this 3-mile hike through Tyler State Park for an afternoon of earthly delight. Meet at the trailhead near the Blackjack Camping loop in your hiking shoes and weather-appropriate hiking gear. This route is challenging, so bring plenty of water and your positive new-year-new-you attitude.
Park admittance is $6 for adults and free for children 12 and under.

Infant CPR Training, Jan. 16, Texarkana
It’s always a good idea to get CPR training. Learn infant CPR at the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System. With this skill, you can be confident that you can save the day in the event of an emergency.

West Texas

Mindfulness First Day Hike, Jan. 1, Canyon
Exercise your body and your brain with a mindfulness hike through the Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Wrap up in warm layers and wear your sturdiest boots to traverse 2 miles of scenic bliss. You won’t find it difficult to be in the moment in the sweeping, awe-inspiring canyon under the big, blue Texas sky.
Park admittance is $8 for adults and free for children 12 and under.

New Year Mind/Body Reset, Jan. 4, El Paso
