There are so many ways to celebrate your freedom this Memorial Day weekend. Honor our country’s fallen veterans at heartfelt ceremonies, flag plantings, community band performances, and fireworks shows. Leverage the rest of your long weekend with opportunities for your family to fish, hike, and get inspired by local art and music.

Central Texas

Kerrville Festival of the Arts, May 25–26, Kerrville
Scoot your boots to historic downtown Kerrville for a complete immersion in Texas art. Browse a multitude of vendor booths showcasing photography, glassworks, paintings, mixed-media creations, and leathercrafts, to name a few options. Continue your artistic indulgence by shopping local antique and collectible boutiques in the area. Your kiddos will enjoy stepping into the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center where they can weave, print, or paint — and be painted.

Boerne Concert Band Memorial Day Performance, May 26, Boerne
At the Boerne High School Auditorium, the Boerne Concert Band will serenade you and your companions with delightful arrangements sure to please audiences of all ages. The musicians are all volunteer, so every note is played with passion. Come early to snag a good spot! Boerne Concert Band shows are always free and open to the public.

North Texas

Memorial Day Weekend Trade Days, May 25–27, Hubbard
Why not fill all three days of your weekend with fun? The Hubbard Memorial Day Celebration kicks off with a citywide rummage sale. Keep your shopping buzz going by exploring numerous personal garage sales in the area. Indulge in a treasure hunt at the antique mall or peruse goodies from vendors at the Hubbard City Civic Center. Conclude Memorial Day weekend with a traditional patriotic parade and pay your respects at the memorial service at Fairview Cemetery.

Memorial Day Music Fest, May 26, Dallas
Tap your foot, dance, and sing along with music artists of all varieties in Klyde Warren Park. There’s something to satisfy every audiophile— with rock, jazz, country, and classical acts from day to night. Kiddos can get their faces painted and climb and play in the family game zone. The whole family can explore vendor booths and purchase savory and sweet foods from the park’s signature food trucks.

South Texas

Memorial Day Ceremony, May 27, Sugar Land
Sugar Land has a whole host of ways to honor veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces for their selfless sacrifice. Their 10th annual celebration includes patriotic music, free educational and commemorative activities, military exhibits, and a flag ceremony. Come hungry to feast on local food on-site.

East Texas

Memorial Classic Fishing Tournament, May 25–26, Port Arthur
For a reel good time, bring the kids to watch and participate in the 45th annual Memorial Classic Fishing Tournament. The Saltwater Anglers League of Texas is the oldest saltwater fishing club in Texas. Bring your bait and tackle to the appropriately named Pleasure Island to catch a delightful fishing experience with the family — for free!

Memorial Day Festival in The Woodlands, May 26, The Woodlands
At this festival, you can pay your respects to veterans who fought for our freedom and help those that protect us today. The Memorial Day Festival in the Woodlands will be bursting with live entertainment, fireworks displays, strolling minstrels, and more. Donate care packages for the men and women serving in our armed forces. You can bring granola bars, beef jerky, deodorant, lip balm, or even gift cards.

West Texas

Landmark After Dark: Night Hike, May 25, Lubbock
The desert at night is a spectacular sight. Get acquainted with the wild part of the Wild, Wild West with a family-friendly nocturnal tour of the Yellow House Draw. This guided, 3.5-mile walk begins 30 minutes before sunset and lasts 75 to 90 minutes. Wear comfortable, sturdy, closed-toed shoes and don’t shy from using generous amounts of bug spray. You’ll be seeing stars — binoculars encouraged!

A Memorial Salute, May 27, San Angelo
The San Angelo Community Band will play a soulful tribute to fallen veterans at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church on Monday night. The band is truly an open community effort — there are no tryouts or auditions to play and all members are able to perform at a level comfortable to them. Come cheer on your friends and neighbors and applaud their hard work!
