Nothing says summer fun like a road trip. Whether it’s across the state or across the country, road trips are proof that getting there really is half the fun. Proper planning is key to a summer road trip that is safe, fun, and memorable — and here are four simple steps to ensuring your vacation is picture perfect.Pick your destinationOf course, the first step in any road trip is to know where you’re going. Oftentimes, there may be a family reunion or other event that predetermines your destination, but if not, picking the best vacation spot is part of the fun.Let everyone in the family weigh in on where they’d like to go, and keep in mind more than the final destination — remember to think about what’s along the way that you could stop and enjoy. Remember, a road trip is about enjoying the ride, not just finishing the journey, so make it enjoyable for everyone.Once you determine your final stop, create a timeline so you know how much time you can spend getting there. Then do more in-depth research about what’s along the way. Don’t rule out offbeat museums and destinations, such as the Texas Prison Museum in Huntsville (home of Old Sparky, the state’s first electric chair) or the 13-ton boulder in Lubbock that has been carved into the likeness of John Wayne.Keep in mind iconic stops — like the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo or the largest ball of twine in Cawker City, Kansas. (Note: If you are traveling with pets, pick “side attractions” accordingly. Not all venues allow animals, and pets should never be left alone in the car.)Plot out the route to reach your destination and then look at what everyone wants to do along the way. Involving all travelers in the planning will make it more of a fun family event.Pack for the tripSure, you know the basics that you need for a summer road trip, such as flip flops, swimwear, and sunscreen. But you also need to make sure you’ve packed essentials, like plenty of water for everyone in the car (including pets), snacks (try to include some of the healthy variety), and first-aid supplies.Keep prescription medicine bottles together in a large zippered plastic bag and make sure they’re accessible in the event of an emergency. And remember to take chargers for any electronics you’ll be bringing along — including the GPS!Prep your carYou’re not the only one who needs to get ready for the road trip — your car does, too. Take your car in at least a week before the trip for a thorough check-up. In addition to making sure the fluid levels and tires are road-ready, check the battery, radiator, hoses, brakes, exhaust system, and transmission.Play It!Finally, the last component of a great road trip is the perfect soundtrack. Select some songs that are fitting for your trip and download the playlist onto your MP3 player. Select some relevant songs — like “Route 66,” if you’ll be traveling on it — and mix in old favorites with new ones. Now, grab the camera, get in the car, and make some great new memories!
